The World Heritage rainforests of the wet tropics region are recognized as one of the most ecologically rich sites in the world presenting one of the biggest drawcards to Mission Beach. Sixty per cent of Australia’s butterflies can be found here, including magnificent Birdwing and the native Ulysses species. Mission Beach is also home to an unusually dense population of the endangered Southern cassowary – a large, flightless bird indigenous to Australia. The area features a range of historical and invigorating walks, taking in stunning scenery of clean coastlines and ancient rainforests. To make the most of Mission Beach’s stunning tropical environs there are a range of activities to enjoy including fishing from fresh clear creeks home to barramundi and mangrove jack, fishing charters to exclusive fishing grounds abundant with sought after tropical reef and sport fish, or kayaking clear coastal waters to nearby islands.
